Meet the founders

I Joshua Mastine was looking for a way to add warmth to my grey dining and kitchen space without completely renovating the space.

I set out to find wood light fixtures made locally, with my industrial design background I could not believe what wooden light fixtures were selling at. I know how much materials cost because I have over a decade of experience in the product design world as an R&D director. I knew then I had to make something more accessible, and improve on what I saw on the market.

Most fixtures of this style are relying on glue to assemble each slat of wood, our design uses a solid clicking mechanism thought of from a product I designed in the furniture world. This method was made possible with my partner Matthew Houtby’s access to manufacturing capabilities with his existing business.

HM Designed was born from that moment: thoughtfully designed, wood-focused lighting made in Canada.

Our Approach

We design lighting that feels light in proportion, presence, and atmosphere.

Each fixture begins with material. Wood is not an accent; it is the foundation. White Oak and Walnut veneer bring warmth, depth, and natural variation to modern interiors.

Layered over a precision-engineered core, the material is selected not only for its beauty, but for its integrity.

We focus on clean lines. Honest construction. Timeless forms.

Designed & Built with Intention

Every fixture is developed in Canada in small batches.

We combine modern manufacturing with hands-on finishing to ensure precision and warmth exist in the same piece.

From material selection to final assembly, we prioritize durability, proportion, and long-term presence in a space.

From the Co-Founder

After over a decade designing commercial furniture, I wanted to build something more personal. A product where material, proportion, and atmosphere carried equal weight. Houtby Mastine Designed is an extension of that belief.

We Are Just Getting Started

Our goal is to continue exploring wood as a primary architectural material, creating lighting that feels warm, refined, and quietly distinctive.
